EDI, which stands for electronic data interchange, ​is the intercompany communication of business documents in a standard format. In essence it is a way for different companies' computer systems to 'talk' to one another.

EDI is automated and replaces paper-based documents such as purchase orders or invoices. It can also be applied to the automatic retrieval of a supplier's cost prices and stock levels.
